The importance of steel in construction today can not be overemphasize. Because they are needed for bigger, better, and formidable constructions, and because concrete alone does not have the strength requirements for sustainable construction, steel is usually combined with concrete to give rise to a composite construction method known as reinforced concrete (RC).
Various bar sizes are used in construction. Structural loads, purpose of structure amongst others, are some of the factors that determine a structural design decision. A design often incorporates different steels of various sizes, some of which may be used as main reinforcements, distribution reinforcements, nominal reinforcements, links or stirrups, etc.
Knowledge of the various bar sizes and weights is necessary for carrying out certain calculations in civil engineering.
