There are two common principles which apply to all methods of surveying. They are:

Working from whole to part is a principle in which an overall system of stations known as control points, fixed to a fairly high degree of accuracy are layed down.
The measurements of details between these control points may then be carried out by less elaborate methods.
The objective is to make sure that errors are contained within the framework of the control points and can be adjusted to it. This is because errors are inevitable.
Error checking: Error checking entails checking survey works for possible errors. All survey works must be checked. All observations and measurements should be made taken in such a way that any error will be apparent before the survey is completed.
Other principles may include:
Consistency of work
Point location by measurements from two reference points
Required accuracy
