Required Steps To Follow In Designing A New Road Pavement
If you wish to design a new road pavement, there some basic steps to be followed – usually, there are three important steps one needs to follow to be able to effectively design a new road pavement. The required steps are as follow:
- Estimating the Amount of Traffic: The first step to be followed in designing a new road is to estimate the amount of traffic and their axle load that will use the road during its expected life span.
- Accessing the Strength of the Subgrade: The next step entails taking an unbiased assessment of the subgrade soil where the road will be constructed. This is to ensure that the subgrade has enough bearing capacity to cater for the axle load distribution of the vehicles estimated in step 1.
- Selecting the Most Economical Combination of Pavement Materials: The third step to designing a new pavement, is the selection of the most economical combination of pavement materials that will cater for the expected load on the road. This is ascertained by taking into cognizance step 1 and 2 above, and selecting the most economic and effective pavement materials that to cater to the expected axle load distribution on the road within the expected life span of the pavement.
