done for any building project, in order to determine the required quantities of
the materials that contribute to the erection of the building, such as the
number of bricks/blocks, quantity of mortar ie, cement and fine aggregate
quantities required to make the building project.

Today, I’ll demonstrate how to
calculate the various quantities of the materials that make up the
brickwork/blockwork of a building.

Let us assume that the wall
thickness = 9’’, wall length = 40’, and wall height = 10’

Determine the
number of bricks, cement and sand, if the size of brick is 9 x 4.5 x 3 inches,
and mortar is 25% of wall.

Solution:
Total brick work
= length x breadth x thickness of brick
= length x breadth x thickness of brick
= 40 x 10 x 9/12
= 300 cft.
25% mortar =
25/100 x 300
25/100 x 300
= 75 cft.
Net brick work =
total brick work – volume of mortar
total brick work – volume of mortar
= 300 – 75 = 225 cft.
Number of bricks
= net brick work / volume of brick
= net brick work / volume of brick
Volume of brick
= (9/12) x (4.5/12) x (3/12) = 0.0703 cft.
= (9/12) x (4.5/12) x (3/12) = 0.0703 cft.
Therefore,
number of bricks = 225/0.0703 = 3200
bricks

Let us include
wastage which may arise due to several factors, such as breaking of bricks,
some bricks being stolen, etc.

Let’s assume that
the wastage is 20%

Hence, wastage =
20/100 x 3200 = 640 bricks

Therefore, total
number of bricks = 3200 + 640
number of bricks = 3200 + 640
= 3840 bricks
Calculating for
cement and sand respectively:

= 75 cft.

Sum of ratio = 1
+ 4 = 5
+ 4 = 5
Cement = 1/5 x
75 x 1.27
75 x 1.27
= 19.05 cft.
Note: We use 1.27 due to the variance in the wet and dry weight of material
